REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File Photo 2/2 By Michel Rose | PARIS PARIS In May last year, then French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron sat down with Socialist lawmaker Christophe Sirugue in the steel town of Le Creusot and asked him to join his new political movement. He said No. Eight months on, others are saying Yes. A political outsider who has never run for office and hopes to transcend the classic Left-Right divide, Macron suddenly seems to have a fighting chance of winning the keys to the Elysee Palace and becoming president before he turns 40. The latest polls show him breathing down the necks of conservative frontrunner Francois Fillon and the far right's Marine Le Pen and he is drawing larger crowds than both at rallies across France. Macron's rise is beginning to create cracks in the mainstream parties as more and more local officials disregard party orders and defect to the 39-year-old's campaign. On the right, four former center-right ministers have backed Macron, illustrating Fillon's struggle to rally moderates behind free-market policies harking back to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Macron's magnetic pull is also being felt at the center. When the management of the small UDI party endorsed cheap flights to San Francisco from sydney Fillon, the party's youth wing sent a furious statement announcing that their 130 elected officials and supporters would back Macron.

09--Come summertime, San Diego travelers will be able to take advantage of nonstop service to five new destinations, courtesy of Southwest Airlines. The carrier said that starting June 4 it is adding Boise and Salt Lake City to its repertoire of year-round nonstop flights flying in and out of the San Diego International Airport, and it will also start flying on a seasonal basis to Newark, Spokane and Indianapolis. The added routes come at the same time that Southwest is expanding both domestic and international service this year. The airline said it expects to grow its "available seat miles" by more than 3 percent this year compared with 2016. The new nonstop destinations out of San Diego's Lindbergh Field will be once daily. RELATED: San Diego gets new nonstop to East Coast "The new service to Boise, Newark and Salt Lake City will increase competition to existing markets, while service to Indianapolis and Spokane will offer travelers a nonstop option to markets not currently served," said Rebecca Bloomfield, a spokeswoman for the San Diego airport. "The added seasonal flights will offer more convenient nonstop service to our business and leisure travelers during the peak summer months." Alaska Airlines currently is the only carrier with nonstop service between San Diego and Boise. United and Alaska have flights to Newark, and Delta and Alaska fly nonstop to Salt Lake. Southwest Airlines' current schedule does not extend past mid-August so it's unknown when the seasonal service will end, said airline spokeswoman Michelle Agnew. In celebration of the new year-round nonstop flights, Southwest is offering one-way fares as low as $89 to Boise and $59 to Salt Lake City. Tickets must be purchased by 11:59 p.m.
